............. beverage!!! Where was YOUR mind??? Chocolate?? I think coffee was originally enjoyed naked almost like tea. But coffee, with its seductive aroma and complex taste, almost begs to be adulterated. Kind of like a baked potato, coffee can be the main vehicle used as an excuse to indulge in a seemingly endless array of combinations! Almost every flavor seems to go with it. Well maybe not every flavor as I don't think alfalfa sprouts would enhance either its flavor or texture, but let's review a few additions that work well.
Milk. Some folks like me like to take a little coffee with their milk. The French made it look and sound irresistible with their Café au lait usually served in a little bowl which requires both hands in order to successfully bring it to your lips to sip. Wonderful on a cold Paris morning.
In South America they fancy condensed milk. In parts of Asia they add sweetened condensed milk to their brew.
Now we have soy, almond, rice and coconut "milk" for those who don't prefer dairy but still want to enjoy their java in conjunction with something creamy.
Sugar. Some folks don't prefer the bitter flavor so they add some sugar. And some folks add a lot! I think the combo of caffeine and sugar was the original precursor to Red Bull.
There are also many sugar substitutes- some prefer the little pink packets, others the blue, still others the yellow. It's like a rainbow of little paper packets. You almost need a degree in nutrition to select the best option. There is also agave syrup though I think this is a newer option. I once stumbled upon an instant coffee infused with honey and ginger while aimlessly wandering the isles of Cost Plus World Market. It was beyond delicious so I returned and bought two boxes and gave one away as a gift and misplaced the other never to be seen again! I returned to Cost Plus a third time only to learn that it was a seasonal item and the clerk had no idea what I was trying to describe in the blue box.
