But much of what we eat or drink is not so simple anymore.
We have come a long way since the times when wheat flour was mixed with chalk by some not so nice vendors in the late 18th -19th century. In deed a long way but perhaps not in the right direction.
Nowadays, food is much more complex and we almost stand no chance of really knowing what we eat / drink. If there is one place where technology is really being shining - it is in the food business. It is just not so evident to the customer.
One of the reasons that consumers hardly really knowing what they are eating or drinking is the very Law that is meant to protect and serve us. It develops too slow, always playing catch up on technology. Another reasons is of course how much the Law is really enforced or not strong enough at least.
Here are some interesting ingredients that might have appeared on one or two ... or hundreds of products you purchased this year.
Do you remember in early 2016 The headlines screamed "The Parmesan Cheese You Sprinkle on Your Penne Could Be Wood" (Bloomberg)
The cheese was found to contain cellulose which is a plant-based material that’s made from many different sources, including wood pulp, as was reported.
This "naturally grown cheese" is very much what can be found for instance in the the beef used in fast-food tacos, you had yesterday's lunch.
In that specific case the cellulose was found to be an unlabelled filler in some less-expensive brands of cheese.
It was not a crime of feeding you poison (food safety issue), but rather that customers weren’t necessarily getting what they were paying for. Hmm "Fake Food"?
How about the pizza you had last night, or perhaps it was a bagel or even the bread you had this morning for breakfast?
Was it delicious?
Did it say on the label: "dough conditioner” or “reaction flavor.”?
What it most likely means is that you had some L-cysteine for breakfast.
It is nothing too serious, it is even rich in amino acid!
